So, What IS D.A.P.?

When I talk about calming collars to our clients, they most often bring up Adaptil products. Lots of people know about the brand Adaptil but they do not know the science behind it, because of this many people are skeptical as to how it works.

They ask, “Does it really help calm my dog?” or things like “How can a simple collar possibly help my anxious dog?” Well, when these products like the collar that is infused with D.A.P. and the diffuser that releases this pheromone reaches your pups nose you will no longer be skeptical of its ability.

D.A.P. also known as Dog Appeasing Pheromone is a chemical released by the bitch as she is nursing her dog appeasing pheromonepuppies, this helps them feel safe and protected so that they may nurse without worry. This chemical was studied thoroughly and has been proven to have a calming effect by creating a sense of security in any age dog.

So, Mom DOES know best!? YES! especially when it comes to our pups.

Do I Recommend?

Well, YES!! I highly recommend all Adaptil products. From helping anxious pups with storm phobia to the pups that are anxious about everything, Adaptil has a product to help tremendously.

Using all 3 products in conjunction can also have great benefits and can be used in different situations. For instance, my pup with generalized anxiety wears an Adaptil collar and both of my pups are exposed to the Dog Appeasing Pheromone through use of the Adaptil diffuser.

This helps them feel safe and secure especially when I’m not home. Although I notice the biggest difference when used together with behavior modification and other ways to stimulate them mentally. All put together in a treatment plan I review with my veterinarian.

It is recommended that the collar be replaced monthly as the pheromone levels slowly deplete, the same is recommended for the diffuser where you can simply order refills for the plug in.

So, Thank You to the Adaptil Brand and Ceva Animal Health for a life changing line of products. Forever thankful are my Ava and Ari girls, for making a tremendous difference in all of our daily lives.

As always never hesitate to ask questions!

In my experience there are certain breeds that are more prone to these kinds of problems and I must say that we are lucky with our ozzie not needing this. My brothers beagle on the other hand should defiantly try this product. He does not sit still for a moment and is constantly barking at any movement or noises. He is a real handfull…….

As with any medication, what is the dosing criteria of these collars or is it a one size fits all?`

There is a small/med collar with the correct dosing for those pups as well as a large collar and even a puppy collar that have the correlated recommended amount of the pheromone. My dogs are about 50 pounds and wear the large.

You are absolutely correct, there are many different breeds that are more high strung that tend to suffer from anxiety more. I do believe you are lucky with your aussie as this breed is very high on the list of dogs who suffer from anxiety. Your brothers pup sounds like he may have some boredom issues as well. Beagles are used to having a job so without one, efforts have to go towards mentally and physically stimulating activities, he may have some accompanied anxiety as well, or it may be increased because he is bored.

Thank you so much for reading and sharing!

Its amazing to read how well this collar worked on your dog and that he actually stuck his head out of the car window after being such a nervous passenger.

I must admit that I haven’t heard of Adaptil products or how they work before reading this, and it is amazing what scientists think of. Also wonderful that they don’t have any smell that we can smell, so no chance of a bout of hey fever from humans with sensitive noses.

Thank you for this most informative article. I am going to pass this information on to my step daughter who has a very nervous dog who hates going in the car.

It was a huge feat, made me a very proud pup mom! Thank you for reading and recommending, always appreciated. It really is so cool to see what these scientists are brainstorming and put into play. There is a slight smell when I initially put it on my dogs, as the pheromone is strongest as this point but its not terribly unpleasant and I stop smelling the next day or sooner

My friend is a vet, and I know from him that this product is beneficial. He has lots of clients who were coming back with good feedback and buying for their friends as well.

I think the diffuser head should be changed at a certain period, right? Should you remove the collar when taking a bath? I assume it should not be used permanently, only in need, right?

Thank you for your informative article.

It’s great to hear others are benefitting too! As long as the diffuser head is working correctly and does not have any shorts or is not getting too hot there really should be no reason to replace. Yes, the collar should be removed when bathing, otherwise it should stay on for the full 30 days, there is a build up effect when you first put it on and then the pheromone will slowly be released. Thank you for reading!

Thanks for the information about Adaptil, Alisha. Until I read this I had no idea something like this even existed. Our miniature schnauzer for the most part is calm and relaxed. The exception is during rain storms, especially if thunder and lightning are involved. Living along the Gulf Coast rain and thunderstorms are frequent occurrences. She will generally sit or lay very still, under a piece of furniture if possible, and shake. If something this simple can reduce her anxiety that is amazing. I’ll definitely be looking into it further.

That is fantastic to hear!  yes, my pup also has thunderstorm anxiety and I would just feel helpless for her, and we would just have to wait it out but I cannot explain how much adapil has helped her! For this case I would recommend the collar or even the spray on a bandana so she can wear it as needed.
